Why a Preseason RV System Check Matters

Spring is when a lot of Texas Hill Country rigs come out of storage and head straight for the road. It is also when hidden problems finally show themselves. I see it every year when I roll up in my 2023 Ford Transit 250 with tools and common repair parts already loaded, and the first call usually starts with, "It worked fine when we parked it."

The truth is, the first trip of the season is when weak batteries, sticky awnings, slow water pumps, loose electrical connections, roof leaks, and tired AC units finally show their cards.

That is why I always recommend a spring shakedown trip before any big vacation. A short weekend run close to home, whether that is near Bandera, Kerrville, or Fredericksburg, gives you a chance to test your RV under real conditions while you are still close to help.

What a Shakedown Trip Reveals

A parked RV can look perfectly fine in the driveway and still have problems waiting to surface. Out in the field, I regularly find batteries that will not hold a charge overnight, awnings that hesitate or bind when extending, plumbing leaks that only show up once the system is pressurized, and air conditioners that struggle once Hill Country heat starts climbing.

A short trip lets you test your shore power, battery charging, water system, appliances, slide-outs, awning, and AC before you commit to a longer haul.

Why It Saves You Money

Small preseason issues get expensive fast. A minor leak can turn into floor damage. A weak battery can leave you dead at the campsite. An awning problem can become a broken arm or torn fabric the first windy afternoon you use it.

Catching those issues early is almost always cheaper and a whole lot less stressful than dealing with them on the road.

My Recommendation

Before your first major trip, spend a night or two close to home and run every major system the way you would on a real trip. Fill the fresh tank. Run the AC. Extend the awning. Check outlets. Watch how the battery charges. Look closely for leaks.

If anything feels off, deal with it before you head farther out. At AM Mobile RV Service, we come to you for preseason inspections, maintenance, and repairs across Bandera, Kerrville, Hondo, Fredericksburg, and Tarpley.

Do not let your first spring trip turn into your first repair call of the season.
